59: Are You a Stasher?
===
Welcome to episode 59 of Permission to Be Messy. I'm your host, JoAnn Krall and today I want to ask you a question. Are you a stasher? So what is a stasher? A stasher in my mind or the, what I've determined a stasher because I have a quiz on organizing styles. It's somebody that does not like a cluttered space, but also doesn't want to get rid of their stuff.
So they tend to stash it away. Open up any closet, drawer, or cabinet in their home and they are filled. Sometimes they're neat. Sometimes they're messy. But basically there's no surface clutter. There's no clutter on the floor. There's no clutter on any of the tables, the counters, any of that. And there's nothing wrong with this.
I'm asking the question because if it's stashed away, it's out of sight out of mind. You may be missing things. But also, it is never really out of sight out of mind because you're always opening up these closets, these cabinets, these drawers and you're seeing all this stuff.
So your space feels clean, but you know, that that stuff is there. So that can really take a toll on us. Our emotions, our stress level just as much as any surface clutter could. Sometimes we like to hide our clutter quickly. You may not be a stasher in everyday life, but you may like to stash everything away when company comes. I've talked about this, a lot of times, I see people doing it in tote bags or in boxes and bins. Which is fine, but they continue to do it over and over again. So there becomes a big challenge how do we tackle all that stuff if we just continue to let it go on and on.
This will be a really quick episode today. It's summertime. I want to keep myself on track and I want to give you something some tidbits, because I really do think that summertime is a great time to declutter. It may not be the best time to be, rearranging everything but actually decluttering and letting go of stuff each day.
So if you are a stasher, and you've got these full closets cabinets, drawers. Pick one drawer, pick one cabinet. Go into that closet and pick one of those bags over those boxes or those bins that you've stashed stuff away. And just deal with the one thing each day. The beauty of being a stasher is you can chip away at this without still seeing the clutter all over your house.
So you're not going to go into that closet and empty the entire closet, because that would be very stressful. Maybe it's not stashed in items, but maybe you're just going to look at one shelf and you're just going to clear that one shelf. It's okay to do this. I know I say this all the time, but it's okay to do this and leave the rest of the stuff for another day so that you're not overwhelmed. Now of course some people are going to want to tackle it all. Know yourself, if you're going to do that, just know yourself. If you were to have to stop in the middle, would it then become worse? Don't do it really try to train yourself to just chip away.
And as you go through these, you know, one shelf, one drawer, one bag. Look at what's in there and think about. Was it detrimental that it was in there? Maybe it's just stuff you're going to get rid of so it's not really a problem. Or maybe it is unpaid bills or insurance policies that you needed to renew, or, maybe items of clothes that needed to be returned to the store. Or if it's in your office, maybe it's, a bunch of leads that you've never followed up on, or clients that you haven't invoiced.
Just take note of what it is. So, you know, you're going to work on one small section and you're going to take notes and you're going to, really be honest with yourself. Did stashing this item away cause me a problem? What was that problem? And think about the next time you go to stash things. You're probably going to continue to stash things away cause you don't want them out.
If it's something that you can create an organizing system behind bars, behind bars. Okay, I'm leaving that in. If it's an organizing system that you can keep behind doors or in a drawer, that's fine. But if you're just, throwing them in don't do that, you want to really be mindful about what you're doing and maybe it is you're going to continue to stash. But you're going to process things on a weekly basis.
So you're not looking at bags from two years ago. You're looking at a bag from last week, which really wouldn't be detrimental. So that's what I have for you today. As always, if you have any questions or topics that you'd like me to discuss, I love that feedback. Because sometimes, talking about organizing there's only so much you can talk about.
And while I know I often repeat myself. I think it's important for people to hear over and over, what to do because sometimes we'll hear it and we'll go. Yeah. Yeah. We're going to do that. And then we just forget about it. So little constant reminders, but I love answering questions. Again, reach out, let me know.
Um, and you know, I never asked this, but if you've been listening or maybe you're just a brand new listener and you go back and listen to some episodes, I would love a review or a rating. That would be really helpful for me because I am getting back in. This is second week in a row. I'm so excited, to finally be back,
So any feedback that you have, I would love And as always, I'm wishing you much progress, peace, purpose, and the permission to be messy. Thanks for listening.
